The Role of AI Planning in the Management of Future Internet

Motivation 

As the current Internet was not designed with management, one of the major research challenges in the design of the future Internet is to include management into the network. Obviously, there are a lot of obstacles in network management to overcome, such as high involvement of human, and brittle and inconsistent managing methods. The authors believe AI-based planning approach can increase the manageability of the future Internet.

Contributions

This paper proposes applying the HTN planning method to facilitate the task decomposition operation and knowledge representation. By analyzing AI Planning's(especially Hierarchical Task Network's) features, including reasoning on the low-level actions according to the high level management objectives, encoding management knowledge, respecting constraints and management policies, having planning domain concept, they show that AI Planning is one of the important building blocks of the future Internet management.
